NASA SCIENTIST TO ATTEND SCI-FI SATURDAY IN YORK.
YORK, PADr. Jitendra Joshi, Chief Technology Advisor for the Advanced Capabilities Division of NASA’s Exploration Systems Mission Directorate, will be one of the featured speakers during Sci-Fi Saturday at The York Emporium used book and curiosity shop in downtown York on Saturday (August 2).
The Exploration Systems Mission Directorate is charged with the tasks relating to the planning and execution of NASA’s manned missions. Among Dr. Joshi’s duties in the DC headquarters of NASA is the coordination of the early planning stages of the upcoming manned missions to the Moon.
Specifically, he is charged with coordination between the Exploration Technology Development, Human Research and the Lunar Precursor and Robotic Programs.
During his presentation on Sci-Fi Saturday, he will provide an overview of the program and, perhaps, offer a few tips on how to get on-board.
“We are really very excited that he has chosen to join us,” said Pam Lewin owner of the West Market Street shop. “This is a world-class scientist who is coming to address us. Frankly we’re honored, and more than a little in awe.”
Sci-Fi Saturday has become an annual event at The York Emporium. It is, according to Lewin, a celebration of the genre as a serious art.
“It is no longer just ray guns and horrible green monsters,” Lewin said. “There are serious themes to be tapped and far-reaching ideas to be explored.”
Which is not to say that the day will be all prim and proper. The day’s events begin with the screening of a blooper reel from popular television shows.
Other events include presentations by writers and publishers of contemporary science fiction, a presentation of 3D imagery (special glasses will be provided), a standup comedian and the formal launch of a fresh science fiction work by Fortress Publishing.
Attendees will also receive a chance to win a prop used on the original Star Trek television show. A “dilithium crystal” will be given away (no purchase necessary) as a door prize.
The celebration actually begins on Friday evening with a wine-and-cheese reception for local artist Mike Hawthorne, who will open an exhibition in the shop’s The Middle Gallery art space. Hawthorne, a York resident, has drawn for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Original pieces and prints will be on display.
Also planned is the formal announcement and call for entries for a science fiction writing contest.
Entrants will be invited to submit original poetry, one act plays or short stories. Professional writers and editors will name one Grand Master and a series of finalists. All winning entries will be included in an anthology to be published this fall.
All Sci-Fi Saturday events, including the gallery opening and the book launch party, are free and open to the public.
“It is going to be a very full weekend,” Lewin said. “I wouldn’t miss it for the galaxy.”
